6/13 Leaving the Octopus Islands

When the time came to leave Waiatt Bay, we took another step forward in our ongoing process of learning how to sail.

I am convinced that most people who own cruising sailboats own the wrong boats. With very little exception people motor in and out of harbor and do not sail up wind. They motor.

So, they have all this money invested in a high tension, hi tech rig and hull, but they don't use it. In fact, for the way they travel in their boats, they are actually quite limited by owning a boat designed to be a sailing craft. How much more interior space could be had, and money saved, if people bought boats designed for the way they actually use them. A boat that would sail well on a reach or run but was designed to motor the rest of the time could easily be designed to have a better interior, more range under power, and a much better view from inside the cabin.

But we all fall in love with our own boats for our own reasons. If this were simply about logic, we wouldn't be out here doing this. For instance, why would someone with a perfectly good motor and an easy exit path choose instead to sail a course through invisible, underwater islands, powered only by winds that constantly threaten to toss the boom from one side of the boat to the other? But that is just what we did.

Having motored in the easy way through a narrow channel between islands, when it came time to leave, we decided to leave under sail. At this point in the journey, the idea of sailing out still made Jiayu feel apprehensive. The course was challenging. It took a lot of chart work to work out the sight lines which would get us safely around the hazards. The narrow channel was not an option. It was so thoroughly sheltered from wind that we would have had to row the boat out.

We sailed out into the main channel and found ourselves in a breeze gusting to 20 knots, exhilerating upwind sailing, and tacked our way toward Okisollo Rapids.
