6/13 - 6/14 Okisollo Rapids (Upper Rapids) and Owen Bay 歐文灣與Okisollo急流

We almost made it through Okisollo Channel's Upper Rapids under sail, almost.

This was our first attempt to sail through one of British Columbia's many tidal races. The key to a safe transit is arriving at slack water when the current is in the process of reversing flow from in to out or out to in. We sailed in on time but just pushing late. By the time we got there, Jiayu had had enough already.

As we tacked into the eddying currents, each one trying to grab the boat and send us in a different direction, we had to keep track of exactly where one submerged rock was located. Under the stress of the newness of the endeavor, and the stress of the gusty wind and unfamiliar action of the currents, we lost track of the rock.

For safety's sake, we started the engine and motored through. On the other side, exhausted, with the wind in Johnstone Strait predicted to reach gale force in the afternoon, we decided to call it a day. We killed the engine, hoisted sail, and tucked into Owen Bay, a large anchorage with plenty of room for all comers. We had it all to ourselves.
