The Syzygy Food Awards
The Mad Scientist Award:
This award goes to the heads of cabbage with whom we have a love hate relationship. I took great care of them, following the instructions in Annie Hill's “Voyaging on a Small Income.” I wrapped each head in paper towels to absorb excess moisture. Every week I'd replace the paper towels. Still, starting in the third week, the base of the cabbages started sprouting roots. Black spots of rot, and big black holes of rot started forming on the leaves. Some looked perfectly fine, but once cut they were rotten to the core. Rob heroically tried to imagine every cabbage dish possible to use up the ones that were still good. I took a scientific approach, cutting into each and every one to explore their various stages of decay.
Gold Medal in Gymnastics:
We award the gymnastics award to, the three dozen eggs. Eggs which have never been chilled can be stored for a long time, but you have to flip them over every week. Our books said they could be stored for about two weeks. Our eggs, instead, stayed fresh for over a month. Starting with fresh organic eggs and following through with intensive gymnastic training got us and additional two to three weeks!
The Forever Young Award:
The Fuji apples win. From beginning to end, and the first to the last apple, the Fujis have kept their crispness and sweetness. We'll never know how long they would of lasted. They simply tasted too good to keep.
Winner of the Syzygy Beauty and Talent Pageant:
Bread and Soymilk. Bread wins for its impressive versatility. When fresh, dipped in olive and paired with one of Rob's multifarious salads, it is simply heavenly. Two or three days later, drier bread makes excellent french toast. And once it becomes fully hardened, it can be broken into pieces and put into soups and stews to make a remarkably tasty and hearty meal.
Note: Bread stored in a plastic bag with mold quickly, but stored in a paper bag it will dry quickly, but will seldom grow mold.
Soymilk stored in metalized cardboard containers will store for an extremely long time if not opened. It tastes good on breakfast cereal, can substitute for milk in pancakes and layer cakes, and can even in a pinch be used to make a rough portrait of an Italian white sauce for pasta. Rob also secretly added a fair amount to his corn chowder to great effect. Add it to coffee and you get the popular American drink: “Soy Latte.”
