5/27 – 5/30 Squirrel Cove

We were told over and over that despite the beauty we are used to in Washington state, and despite the beauty of the Gulf Islands, that Desolation Sound would stun us with its beauty.

In the face of such hype, it's hard not to be disappointed, and yet Desolation Sound withstood all of the gushing. Looking east to face the sound and its snow capped mountains I was overwhelmed with a sense of great good fortune to be able to take this trip. We saved our eastward venture for another day and anchored in Squirrel Cove.

We spent three nights in Squirrel Cove and finally relaxed after spending the last several weeks making time to get to Desolation Sound. A beautiful, secluded cove, Squirrel Cove was a wonderful retreat.

For the sailing aficionados, much to the surprise and shock of Jiayu, I tacked out of the harbor through that narrow entrance (see the map) against the wind. It took me two tries. The first one ended when another boat entered the harbor, blocking our exit. Watching me labor to make it through this small gap, the helmsman assumed our engine was broken and offered us a tow. His wife was truly baffled that I would sail out of the harbor for fun.
